- Babies born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome have: smaller heads and brains, some degree of mental retardation, poor coordination, hyperactivity and abnormal facial features.
- Between November 2005 and August 2006, over 8,000 students who presented as new patients to the health service at a large public university were screened for high-risk drinking, and almost 2500 students (28%) screened positive on the 5/4 gender-specific high-risk drinking question; high risk drinking is considered five or more drinks per occasion for men and four or more for women.
- According to a recent sleep study at the University of Harvard, alcohol consumption within several hours of bedtime appeared to disrupt sleep and cause a person to awaken several hours into the sleep process and have problems returning to sleep without difficulty; this sleep disruption can lead to daytime fatigue and drowsiness.
- Alcohol is a depressant that affects the central nervous system; alcohol abuse can worsen existing conditions such as depression or induce new problems such as serious memory loss, depression, or anxiety.
